This age calculator returns your precise age based on the date of birth you enter and the current date. It accounts for variable month lengths and leap years by walking back from "today" to "your birthday in this calendar year" with proper carry logic — if today is before your birthday this year, the year count drops by one, and the months/days roll over from the previous month's actual length.

Beyond the headline number, the calculator also reports your total days lived and the day of the week you were born. The day-of-week calculation uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar, which means it is accurate for any date in modern history and beyond. Many people are surprised to learn they were born on a Tuesday or Friday, and it can be a fun fact to share with family.

The countdown to your next birthday is computed by finding the next occurrence of your birth month and day on or after today. If today is your birthday, the countdown shows zero. The calculator handles edge cases like February 29 birthdays by rolling the date forward to the next valid day in non-leap years.

Age is a more subtle concept than most people realise. Western tradition uses the "completed years" definition this calculator returns: you are 25 until the moment your 26th birthday begins. Some East Asian traditions add a year at birth (so a newborn is already 1) and increment everyone's age at the lunar new year, which can put a baby born in late December at "age 2" only weeks after birth. Korea formally moved to the Western system in 2023, but older relatives and traditional documents may still use the older convention.

Leap years complicate any age calculation. The Gregorian calendar adds a leap day every four years, skips it in century years, then adds it back every four centuries — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not. This calculator handles all of those rules automatically. People born on February 29 typically celebrate on February 28 or March 1 in non-leap years, but their legal age in most jurisdictions still increments on March 1, which is the next valid day after their actual birthdate.

Many insurance, pension and tax systems use "age nearest birthday" or "age last birthday" rather than the completed-years figure shown here. Life insurance underwriters in particular often round to the nearest birthday, which can change your premium by a noticeable amount in the months leading up to or following a birthday. Always read the fine print on the application form to know which convention is being used, and ask the insurer to confirm in writing if a few months will move you across a band.

Birthday traditions vary enormously around the world. Spanish-speaking countries celebrate the quinceañera at 15, sweet-sixteens are an American milestone, and 18, 21 and 25 are legal coming-of-age markers in different countries. Use the days-lived count to plan novelty milestones — your 10,000th day falls around age 27, and your 1-billionth second comes just before your 32nd birthday. Small numerical milestones make great excuses for a memorable celebration.
